Essay Topics in the 19th Century
Essay Topics in the 19th CenturyEssay topics in 19th century literature are extremely diverse. These topics will also be diverse in today's era, so it is a good idea to consider the subject matter at hand when you are writing an essay for your college education. There were two types of essay topics in the 19th century: a 'focus' essay on a single theme and a broad topic essay on a broad topic. The focus essay was about a specific topic or theme. It usually focused on a writer's personal life and personal opinions. The broad topic essay dealt with a wide range of topics. It covered political issues, scientific inquiry, social issues, economic theory, the arts, etc. For example, if you were writing a general essay about women, you would address that topic in a broad topic essay. A general essay would not be an essay at all.It seems hard to break down each of these broad topics into a traditional essay. I believe this because it was difficult in the 19th century to write a straight-forwar d essay on any subject. Our written language was quite difficult to comprehend in those days.I am thinking here of the long-standing genre of novels. Novels were written in narrative form, although some were literary pieces composed of shorter vignettes. When you read a novel, you can get lost in the story. In a sense, the novel is a single narrative poem, if you will.Today's essay topics include literature that is written as a novel, an essay about a contemporary writer, essay about a romantic relationship, essay about current events, and even essay about popular culture. You will find more topics, especially in the humanities. It's much easier to read literature now, thanks to the Internet. In addition to broad topic essays, you will also find essay topics in which the writer has a short story in mind. Or, maybe they are working on a longer story about their theme. Some writers have extensive libraries of short stories, which they utilize as their topic.I hope that you will conside r the wide range of topics when you write an essay in the 19th century. The subject is a good starting point. As you study the writings of the nineteenth century, consider how you might apply these essays in your own college education.
